Spine.

The clank and clatter of steel could be heard. It was muffled by a haze and whispering. Steel scraped tauntingly along a metal slab. The vibrations rattled through out the musky smelling room. It smelt like sterilizing fluid and old clothing, rotting and moth ridden. The room was brightly lit, almost blindingly so. A faint humming could be heard from the heating lamps that lay scattered precisely through out the room. If one concentrated hard enough they could imagine the eerie humming was merely Cicadas humming in the Summer heat. In every corner there were old newspaper clippings that looked to be from the 1950's, or earlier. They crumpled and slowly turned to ash. The floors were tiled but cracked, a deep brown substance oozed from every crack dirtying the pale grey tiles. Intricate foot prints tracked the ooze around the entire room. The walls were bare and a sullen tan from age and lack of cleaning. They held no paintings or photos of distant relatives, nor had they ever, or so it seemed. One wall, the West wall was purely glass. It was stained a rustic brown, the colour of dried and crusted blood. Perhaps it was. Dust was caked in every nook and cranny and yet it smelt so sterile. Impossible but true.

The surgeon extracted his scalpel from a steel tray, it glinted menacingly in the hot light. Beads of sweat escaped large pores in the mans wrinkled and weathered face. Slowly they dripped to the floor, that was as clean as they were going to get, so mocking. He tested the scalpel with the index finger of his left hand. Sharp as the day it was bought. Satisfied he peered down at his test subject. A cruel smirk slashed across his face. He placed his mask on and lowered the scalpel.

A soft meow escaped the poor defenceless creature that lay on the cold steel slab. Frightened beyond belief its meow trembled along with its small body. Its fur began to stand on end, its lungs began to breathe with labour. An invisible fist seemed to clench its entire body and ring it out like a dirty dish cloth. Struggling against the restraints its spine bent at impossible angles. That’s what he had wanted. The spine.

He turned to his audience. Through the glass he could make out the eyes of a few people, or perhaps they weren’t people at all. It mattered not to this surgeon, as long as they witnessed his brilliance. Speaking in a loud booming voice that rattled the glass between the two rooms he began. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you my creation, my masterpiece, my legacy. I shall extract the spine of this beast and create what men have only dreamed of for centuries. As God as my witness I shall create what will be known as mans greatest accomplishment. I shall become a God in itself. I, me.”

He whirled around to face the metal slab. His grin became wide beneath the mask. He lowered the scalpel and made the first incision. In the centre of the neck he dragged his scalpel along the spine upwards until he found where it connected to the skull. He then made an incision to form a T shape at the back of the creatures head. With a sturdy hand he peeled the skin back. Blood oozed out slowly and matted the fur around the wound. With expert knowledge of the skeletal structure he cracked the spine from the skull. He retrieved his tongs and forced them in between the flesh and the spine. Once he had them in the right place he tugged slightly. The spine held fast. His eyes narrowed and he grunted under his breath.

Beyond the glass a low growl emerged in the darkness. Eyes searched the room. Fangs glimmered in the faint light coming from the dust covered glass. What seemed like thousands of teeth erupted from a gigantic jaw. He waited.

Another incision was made, one that went half way down the spine. Blood poured onto the metal slab. His latex gloved hands smeared it everywhere. Again he reached for the tongs. He lodged them between the flesh and spine yet again and pulled viciously. A suction cup pop rang through the room. A cry of joy escaped his evil body. Slowly he wiggled the spine until it came loose. He extracted the spine carefully though his impatience was growing rapidly. Excitement bubbled and churned his insides.

Finally the last inch of spine was extracted. Blood gushed out of the empty hole attempting to fill the void. The creature lay still. The surgeon in his excitement neglected to toss the creature into the near by garbage bin and left it laying on the metal slab. Open and vulnerable. He dipped the spine along with his hands into the special solution he had prepared earlier that day. When he pulled the spine from the solution it glowed an eerie and unnatural glow. As he marvelled at his creation all else was shut out. He didn’t see it coming.

The creature disguised as a cat that lay on the slab began to regenerate its spine. The blood that had been lost rapidly flooded back into its body and the gaping wounds healed almost instantly. It lay still, waiting.

Softly the creature beyond the glass nodded. It prowled low to the ground towards the exit. Its hideously large claws twisted the knob with ease. Slithering through the open doorway like a snake it came upon the room where its mate lie. Room 27 the door read. As though the creature could not wait a moment longer it stood on its hind legs and began to transform. Bones and muscles cracked and stretched. Organs moved into place and the spine spasmed.

The door burst open with such force the hinged groaned and held on for dear life. The surgeon whirled around in a start. His eyes grew cold and his skin paled. The creature now in Human form strode carelessly towards the surgeon, coming to a stop just before him. They stood trapped in time, face to face for what seemed like an eternity. The surgeon made the first move. He swiped his free hand across the creatures face. A small cut on the creatures skin healed instantly. His thousand teeth appeared in a deathly menacing grin.

The surgeon tried to run but failed. The creatures hand gripped him around the neck and held him high. Slowly its claws began to pierce through the human flesh and wrapped like razor blades around the surgeons throat. Tiny cuts began to emerge. The creature entered a euphoric state. He had waited so long. He laid the surgeon on top of another metal slab across the room. The surgeon was still. The creature had no need for the tight leather straps that had held his beloved for so long, not for this human, he was paralysed with fear.

The creature walked over to its mate. The straps gave way to a single claw strike and she was free. Finally free. Pain glimmered in her eyes but soon faded. The look of lust and revenge replacing the pain. Together they walked over to the surgeon, the human and his pet. With a blink of ones eye they both transformed into their true selves. Beautiful and yet horrifying, the perfect creature.

Their claws extended, they pierced the surgeons right arm and leg and flipped him over onto his stomach. They turned and looked each other in the eyes for a moment. Savouring the moment. With immense speed and skill they made the same incisions the surgeon had made on his beloved. They extracted his spine the same way he had done and made sure he stayed alive to endure all of the pain. His flesh curled as though burnt and the blood trickled down onto the metal slab like a waterfall. His hideous skin now turned pale and stained. The organs surfaced as they spread open his body wider and wider. They seemed to tremble and stammer looking for a hiding spot again like the warm wet surroundings of muscle and tissue they had once known.

Gasping for air the surgeon felt everything that was happening but was powerless to stop it. His beloved inched one sharp claw towards the surgeons left lung. Slowly she pressed down and let the air escape like a Child's birthday balloon. She squealed with delight. Next she sliced open his stomach while her love extracted the surgeons intestines and gathered them up in one bloodied fist. She nodded and he forced open the surgeons mouth and stuffed in 7 or 8 inches of his own intestines into his mouth. She slashed at various muscles that were visible and shoved them into his stomach. Closing the gap she squeezed forcing it all to go through the surgeons intestines and into his mouth. A pleased laugh escaped her throat, much like one a small child would have during the Christmas season.

Finally her love sawed at the surgeons skull and cracked it open to expose his brain. They each took half, poking through the delicate tissue with their sharpest and longest claw and held it up high. As a toast they clashed the brain halves together as blood splattered all over the floor. Smiling their triumphant smile with thousands of teeth they sunk their teeth into the first bit and devoured the surgeons brain.

They finished and grew bored and so they finally let the surgeon die. Even as the surgeon was dying he held fast to the extracted spine not willing to let it go, even in death.

Authors note: Another dream, you may be thinking “my god you have hideously grotesque dreams.” And you would be right, I do often times. However I also have wonderful dreams and ones that are just plain puzzling. I adore dreaming and so I thought why not share some of them with the world? Of course the story is elaborated upon but I'm sure you can imagine how vivid and horrifying the basic story is especially in such detailed dreams that I seem to always have. I know my writing style changes from story to story and you really never know what to expect but none the less I hope you enjoyed reading it. More gruesome tales to come. Promise.
